JIREH, Strict and particular Baptist Chapel, Boars Isle, St Michaels, Tenterden, Kent.

Pastor: Mr G Hyde
Deacon: Mr E Pont

History
The opening service of the present Jireh chapel were held on the 20th October 1869. This is the forth chapel in which the Strict Baptists have met for worship in Tenterden. People first gathered together in 1841. And formed a chapel that was situated between East cross and New Town. Mr Frederick Brown became the pastor. From there they moved to a chapel at Homewood in 1844 where Mr Brown continued as pastor, and was followed by Mr James Haffenden. This chapel was called “Jireh”. The name was carried over to the third chapel sited in Grange road near to the Crown Inn, where the congregation moved to and was opened in 1856 where Mr Haffenden continued to minister as pastor until he died in 1859. There was an interim when various ministers were asked to come and preach until Mr Vinden became pastor at the end of 1864.  This chapel was leased and when the lease ran out they needed to obtain another chapel, which is the present chapel off the Ashford Road, St Michaels, built in 1869, and  continues to bear the name of “Jireh”.
Mr Vinden continued as pastor in the new chapel until 1879 when he unexpectedly died. The next pastor was Mr Reuben Weeks who commenced his pastorate in 1884 and continued until 1922. Mr Weeks has been the longest serving pastor in the Chapel’s history. A long period followed when there was no pastor until 1961 when Mr Bernard Honeysett, became pastor and after serving for just over 7 year left to set up another chapel in the town. In 1971 Mr JOHN Farley was called to be pastor and was so until 1980 when he died, leaving the church to rely on various ministers until 1991 when Mr Gilbert Hyde became pastor and is still the present pastor.

Beliefs
We believe that the Scripture are inspired of God and written by men appointed by God to do so, the Old Testament written originally in Hebrew, and the New Testament in Greek. We use the Authorised, King James version as being the best and accurate translation.
We believe that the universe was created by God in six Days, and that God Rested the seventh day. Which God then instructed man to keep the seventh day holy and make it a day in worshipping God. This day was changed to the first day of the week when Jesus Christ God’s Son rose from the dead.
We believe in the doctrines of God’s grace that are summed up by Calvin, which are:
  • Man’s total depravity
  • Unconditional election
  • Particular redemption
  • Effectual calling
  • Final perseverance of the saints

We also believe in the seconded coming of the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of time when all those for whom he died shall be raised from the dead to be with him in Heaven and those who do not believe are raised from the dead to endure the deserved punishment of Hell.
